The Garner Woman’s Club Presents: The Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded yearly to a Garner area High School Senior based on the candidate’s character, scholastic records, evidence of intellectual promise, demonstration of ambition, leadership ability, and need for financial assistance. 

Sallie Southall Cotten (1846-1929) was one of the leading advocates of education for women in early-twentieth century North Carolina. As a resident of Pitt County, Cotten achieved national prominence for her work. She was a noted author and public figure.

Cotten established herself as an outstanding leader among women, playing key roles in a variety of organizations at the local, state, and national levels. Cotten was an active member of the North Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs, and due to her untiring support for women’s education, she became the namesake of various scholarships.
