Federation History

GFWC of North Carolina (GFWC-NC)

The North Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs was organized May 1902 when
representatives of seven clubs met at Salem College in Winston-Salem to “unite the
Women’s Clubs of North Carolina into a state-wide charitable organization for the
promotion of education and activities in civic, cultural, educational and social welfare for
the betterment of the commonwealth.” The name of the organization was changed May
1998 to GFWC of North Carolina, Inc. to better identify the North Carolina Federation
with its parent organization.

GFWC-NC is a member of the Southeast Region, and is composed of local clubs
divided into districts. Garner Woman’s Club is in District 6. With over 110 clubs
throughout North Carolina, we are improving our local communities through programs
in Arts and Culture, Civic Engagement and Outreach, Education and Libraries,
Environment, and Health and Wellness. We are diverse in age, interests and
experiences, but we are united by a desire to create positive change, and, together, we
transform lives every day.

We are a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), an international
women’s organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of
others through volunteer service. Established in 1890, GFWC and its over 60,000 members
represent more than 20 countries. Each club maintains its identity and focus while
benefiting from the strength that comes from being a part of the world’s largest and oldest
international volunteer service organization whose motto is “Unity in Diversity”.
